Weekend Perspectives: The floods this time

Saturday, September 25, 2004

Environmental degradation and development made matters worse.

NOTE:   Editors write the op-ed titles and prologues and often change an author's wording in the article itself.   Actually, Dave doesn't use the "D-word" (i.e. dev...), he refers to what it is, which is usually "subsidized real estate speculation," "land consumption," or "conversion of farmland or natural habitat to residential and commercial uses."   It's also frequently coupled with "economic" to form the "e-d phrase," which is just another code phrase for the same thing.   Speculators deliberately use the e-d phrase to get people to think of their latest real estate speculation proposal as being synonymous with economic improvement, job creation, a higher standard of living, and a better quality of life with.   That's why if you use their words, they win!

Op-Ed: We need major reform, but not home rule

Wednesday, May 13, 1998

Pursuing mindless growth, local bigwigs are leading us to disaster. The charter will make things worse

NOTE:   In the time since this article was published, the problems forecast by this article have come true:   The movement for consolidation of power continues while real estate speculation has been on a role; the resulting decline of our traditional urban neighborhood communities has brought our city to its knees; and those areas which are just barely holding on are about to have the rug ripped out from under them.
